Specialist techniques

12Staff from the RPU are involved in providing the following specialist techniques performed at BHOC.

High dose rate brachytherapy: involves placing high activity sealed radioactive sources as close to the tumour site as possible for a short period of time. It is currently used to treat prostate and gynaecological cancers.

Stereotactic radiotherapy and radiosurgery: is used to treat small brain lesions very accurately by using precise methods of beam delivery and patient immobilisation.

Total body irradiation is a type of radiotherapy administered prior to a bone marrow transplant. A uniform dose is administered to the patient by irradiating the whole body.
