Outpatient Department and Day Assessment Unit

The Outpatient Department and Day Assessment Unit is open Monday - Friday from 08:00 - 18:00. The department consists of a Team Manager, Senior Staff Nurse, Staff Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Clinic Co-ordinator and Receptionists.

A number of clinics are run from the department, including: 

  • Eye Imaging and Lucentus Injections, Glaucoma Diabetic Eye Screening, Post-op cataract - all provided by the Bristol Eye Hospital
  • Thrombosis Nurse
  • Audiologist, providing screening
  • Diabetic Specialist Nurse
  • Respiratory Clinics both consultant and Nurse Led
  • Care of the Elderly Falls Clinics, Movement Disorders Clinic & Parkinson's Nurse
  • Stroke Clinic
  • Upper / Lower Gastrointestinal Clinics
  • General Surgery
  • Gastroenterology
  • Urology
  • Vascular
  • Dermatology
  • Physiology
  • Cardiology including a pacemaker clinic and technicians (24 hour Tapes)
  • Homepathy
  • Gynaecology
  • Trauma and Orthopaedic
  • Rheumatology
  • Abdominal Aortic aneurysm (AAA) Screening
  • Sexual Health
  • Dietetics
  • Paediatric Clinics including Dieticians, Endocrinology, Dermatology, Asthma and Allergy, all provided by paediatric trained staff form the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
  • Neonatology

We also have Midwives based at the hospital who run clinics on a daily basis, including the weekends.

The Day Assessment Unit provide a variety of clinical and therapy services including Fall/Balance, Anxiety and Upper Limb clinics. Intervention includes:

  • Comprehensive multidisciplinary Team (MDT) assessment in clinic
  • Treatment plan aimed at individual factors identified
  • Provision of advice / equipment / exercises as required
  • Ongoing treatment individually +/- group sessions
  • Safety advice, progression of exercises (strength, posture, balance, gait), backward chaining (on-off floor practice), provision of home exercises
  • Referral on to other services as required - orthotics, Hearing Therapy, Community Nurse / Occupational Therapist / Physiotherapist, etc
  • Liaison with medical staff / family / carers as required

Day Surgery and Endoscopy Unit

A number of surgical procedures can be carried out at South Bristol Community Hospital, which do not require an overnight stay. This includes:

  • Gynaecology
  • Urology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Trauma and Orthopaedic
  • Vascular
  • Upper Gastrointestinal
  • Oral and Maxillo Facial


SBCH has 56 funded inpatient beds made up 16 stroke rehabilitation beds with the remaining 40 rehabilitation beds.

The consultants covering the inpatient beds are Dr Clow,  Dr MacMahon, Dr Caine & Dr Croxson. There is medical cover on site from 09:00 - 17:00, with out of hours support being provided from the Bristol Roayl Infirmary (BRI).

Urgent Care Centre (UCC)

The UCC is open daily from 08:00 - 20:00 and is run by Bristol Community Health. The UCC offers all the services available at a Walk-in Centre as well as X-rays and other diagnostic tests. The UCC can treat both adults and children with conditions such as: sprains & strains, cuts & grazes, suspected broken bones, minor burns & scalds and minor head injuries.

Chemotherapy Suite

Chemotherapy and Supportive Care treatments are provided from the SBCH Chemotherapy Suite by staff from the Haematology and Oncology Centre.
