Access / Referrals

Routine referrals to the diabetes specialist nurses should be made by letter.

Urgent Advice for Healthcare Professionals

For urgent diabetes advice please in the first instance contact the Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DSNs) on 0117 342 2892. Voice mails will be responded to. The DSNs are available on weekdays from 09:00 - 17:00.

Please refer all newly diagnosed patients with Type 1 diabetes and we will endeavour to see them the same day to avoid admission.

For insulin pump problems contact Elisabeth Jones.

As a department we receive several letters, emails and telephone calls each week seeking endocrine specialist advice. This advice may concern existing endocrine patients with interim results or it may be regarding patients not currently known to our service where specialist advice may either direct an efficient diagnostic pathway or even avoid a referral altogether. To address this challenge we established a helpline in 2009 which is manned 09:00 - 17:00 on weekdays and is accessed via the BRI switchboard (bleep 6216). Please note that the following information is required:

  • Patient name and Date of Birth
  • Details of referring healthcare professional - name and contact details
  • Clarity regarding the clinical query

This service receives a considerable volume of calls and discussions are on-going with primary care to formalise this service from a funding point of view.

Podiatry

The Diabetes Foot Team comprises Bristol Community Health employed diabetes specialist Podiatrists (Service Lead: Oonagh Wilson) who work under a service level agreement for University Hospitals Bristol. Podiatry led clinics are held twice weekly (Tuesday and Friday mornings) and provide podiatric care for patients with diabetes with active foot pathologies (e.g. foot ulceration/Charcot. The team has close links to the diabetes service and most particularly work together in the monthly multidisciplinary team (MDT) Diabetes Foot Clinic.
