Emergency Admissions

Bristol Royal Infirmary

Medical Admissions (Monday - Friday, 09:00 - 19:00)

0117 934 9335

On contacting the BRI switchboard General Practitioners will be put through to the General Practitioner Support Unit (GPSU) located within the Ambulatory Care Unit (A413) based on level 4 in the Queens Building.  Following discussion with the referring GP, the Duty GP in the unit will either arrange to; assess the patient in the GPSU; suggest management of the patient through an agreed alternative primary or secondary care pathway; or direct them to an appropriate assessment area.  In this case the GP will advise the relevant assessment unit of the patient's referral.

Within the BRI this may be the:

  • Ambulatory Care Unit (A413) located on Level 4
  • AMU (Acute Medicine Unit - A300) located on Level 3
  • Older Peoples Assessment Unit (A400) located on Level 4

Only when clinically indicated will the patient be directed to the Emergency Department.  GPs are asked not to send medically expected patients directly to the Emergency Department unless instructed to do so.

Monday - Friday (19:00 - 09:00), Saturday and Sunday

The Clincal Site Managers at the BRI are responsible for accepting emergency GP referrals during these hours.  The Clinical Site Management Team consists of experienced Band 7 Nurses with a broad remit that includes bed management and clinical support to the wards.

On contacting the BRI switchboard General Practitioners will be put through to a Clincal Site Manager who will take details of the patient and their presenting condition.  In addition they will ask for the General Practitioner's name and Practice details.

The Clincal Site Manager will be able to advise on the current status of the Assessment Units and agree the arrival location for the patient, they will also be able to advise on the availability of admission alternatives such as the Acute Response Team or Hot clinic appointments.

The medical team at the BRI and the agreed Assessment Unit will be informed about the patient by the Clinical Site Manager.
