Access / Referrals

Referral criteria:

Any child from birth

Size

All burns/scalds in children aged 15 or under with a TBSA ≥1%

Depth

All thickness burns

Site

Burns/scalds to face, hands, perineum and/or chest, circumferential burns or involving a major joint

Mechanism

Chemical, electrical, friction or cold injury burns, suspected non-accidental injury or neglect

Co-morbidity

Inhalation injury
All children with child protection concerns

Other

Any children 'unwell' shortly after a burn injury of any size, any burn injury not healed within 2 weeks

Toxic Shock Advice

If a child presents with any of the following symptoms following a burn injury, a full re-assessment is required at the Burns Centre:

  • High Temperature (<38̊)
  • A rash
  • Diarrhoea and/or vomiting
  • General malaise - not eating or drinking or disinterested in surroundings
  • Tachycardia/Tachypnoea
